First I will review some basic properties of the six-dimensional (2,0) theory, or M5-brane theory, and detail the motivations for considering its compactifications. Then I will explain how one can perform a reduction of the non-abelian (2,0) theory on a curved background, focusing on the reduction on a topologically twisted two-sphere, and show that this compactification results in a four-dimensional supersymmetric sigma model, with target space a moduli space of monopoles.
